Here we go challenge 3 out of 4 in 5 weeks!
In terms of fear I think this is the one I'm most worried about. The thought of continually swimming for 2 miles round a lake without putting my feet down makes me wobble. But I haven't come this far to only come this far right? On we march...or Swim Serpentine in this case!
My First Endurance Swim
2 miles of swimming round the Serpentine in London...
The Swim Serpentine challenge seems like such a simple thing. Just put one arm forward then the other and keep going till you've been round the lake twice. Yeh sure all fine and dandy unless you have a fear of what lurks beneath and don't like the black murkiness below. But if we don't face our fears they control us. And we are the boss!
Seeing all the tall broad shouldered athletes line up in their wetsuits made me freak out a bit. But I poured myself into my battered faithful Orca wetsuit and lined up to join them.
I let the masses charge forward because I didn't fancy getting a kick in the teeth and once the foam of many bodies cracking into speed mode left me behind I found a nice easy rhythm and got to work.
I trained front crawl and I knew I could do the distance because I'd done it in the sea going up and down along the shoreline but the water tasted different and felt different and I didn't like putting my face in it. Actually the views round the lake were so pretty I kept wanting to look up so I switched to breast stroke.
I was extremely slow due to this last minute change but I wanted to feel safe and enjoy myself and I did just that. And when I wobbled my way up the gantry to a camera lense pointed straight at me I felt every bit as tall as those athletes at the start. Endurance swim...completed it friends...and earned my London Classics medal in the process wahooooooo!
WE CAN DO HARD THINGS!
